Substitution of Cereal Bran by Broiler Litter in High - moisture Complete Rations for Dairy Heifers

Abstract
Eighty Holstein heifers averaging 168 §¸ were assigned randomly to one of four complete rations containing graded levels of deepstacked broiler litter (0, 15, 30, and 45% on dry matter basis) in order to study effects on animal production and feed economics. High-moisture (40 ¡ 48%) complete rations were formulated to be isoenergetic and were fed for 3 months. Animals were fed in groups without replications. Deepstacked broiler litter (DBL) replaced barley and wheat bran. Feeding DBL did not affect body weight change and average daily gain (ADG). Feed dry matter (DM) intake tended to be high for DBL-fed groups, followed by a tendency of low feed efficiency, compared with those of a control group. Rate of feed cost savings (feed cost/gain) was substantial for DBL-fed groups, compared to that of a control group. No problem with animal health was observed. It was confirmed that dairy heifers may be fed up to 45% of DBL in a high-moisture complete ration.
